Science or Art?
I grew up in Honolulu, where I spent a lot of time in the ocean looking at sea cucumbers and other fun critters. Then I moved to Washington for my undergrad, where I spent a lot of time looking at critters but this time I also wrote down lots of numbers and did a bunch of math. With my Bachelors of Science in Biology I fell head over heels into academia and world of ecology research. I did zillions of titrations with lake water, I went to the arctic and measured hundreds of tiny leaves, I spied on fish with underwater cameras, cloned lots and lots of DNA, and even dissected dozens of dead maggots! I love to explore- and the scientific method is one way to do that. But another valuable way to explore the world is through art - which is something that I have been doing as long as I've been interested in science and critters, and always wanted to incorporate more into my career.
But then I got a concussion...
It was a serious one, and it didn't get along with my high demand science lifestyle. So after a year of working cool science jobs out of college, I took a step back and moved to Olympia to recuperate with family.
At least now I had space to return to art! When I was feeling well enough, I got into it. I painted the largest painting I've yet to attempt, fell in love with a new medium (Gouache), knitted a couple of basic but cozy scarfs - and led a couple family paint and sips! It felt good to be growing in that way again, but I felt like I was still missing something important.
Enter: SOAP - a sudsy mix of Science and Art
I had been wanting to try Cold Process soap making for a while, but never had the capacity. Saponification had been my favorite part of organic chemistry, and its a whole new dimension of aesthetics and artistic expression that I was itching to dip my toes into. And after healing up some, I was privileged with the opportunity to give it a try. So I made my first batch of soap! It was so fun that I made another one and then another one...and I haven't really stopped.
